Chemical fume hood testing for Houston laboratories

LabCertTech provides fume hood certification in Houston and surrounding areas. We work with laboratory managers, EHS departments, and facilities teams to evaluate chemical fume hood performance under documented operating conditions.

A chemical fume hood draws laboratory air into the enclosure to capture and exhaust hazardous vapors. Its performance depends on the hood design, sash opening, building exhaust, room airflow, and how equipment is arranged inside. Testing helps your facility assess these conditions against the agreed acceptance criteria.

What the testing scope can include

  • Face velocity measurements: readings across the opening at the documented sash position.
  • Airflow visualization: smoke observations to assess airflow behavior and identify visible escape or disruption.
  • Sash and physical condition: review of the working opening and accessible hood components.
  • Airflow monitor and alarms: applicable checks based on the installed system and agreed scope.
  • Performance documentation: measured results, test conditions, acceptance criteria, and observed deficiencies.
Need a full ASHRAE 110 evaluation?

Tell us before requesting a quote so the required scope can be confirmed. Routine face velocity and smoke testing are not equivalent to a complete ASHRAE 110 evaluation with tracer gas containment testing.

Criteria matched to your hood and facility

We establish the testing basis using the hood manufacturer’s guidance and your facility’s requirements. A single face velocity target is not appropriate for every hood. The report should identify the applicable limits and sash opening so results can be interpreted correctly.

For covered laboratories, OSHA’s Laboratory Standard requires the Chemical Hygiene Plan to address proper functioning of fume hoods and other protective equipment. Field testing supports that program; safe operation also requires appropriate use and maintenance.

When to request testing

Schedule routine evaluation according to your facility’s Chemical Hygiene Plan. Also discuss testing after exhaust fan work, HVAC changes, room balancing, relocation, or modifications that may affect hood performance. Report persistent alarms, damaged components, or abnormal airflow before the visit.

How to prepare for your appointment

  1. Send the equipment details. Include the make, model, serial number, number of hoods, building, and room.
  2. Share the testing requirements. Provide the previous report, approved sash height, and facility acceptance criteria.
  3. Coordinate with facilities. Confirm normal ventilation operation, access, and a contact for exhaust system questions.
  4. Prepare the work area. Remove unnecessary storage and identify equipment that remains inside during normal use.

Use our Houston laboratory certification checklist to plan the visit.

Reports and follow-up

Your report identifies the hood, methods, readings, test conditions, acceptance criteria, and deficiencies found during the agreed testing. If a hood does not meet the criteria, we document the issue and explain what needs attention before retesting.

Diagnostics, repairs, or testing beyond the approved scope require a separate review. Substantial additional work proceeds only after written authorization for the added scope and price.

Fume hood certification questions

Does an airflow monitor replace field testing?

No. A monitor provides an operating indication, but it does not replace the measurements and observations required by your facility’s testing program.

Can testing be coordinated across multiple campus buildings?

Yes. Send an equipment list organized by building and room, along with access requirements and preferred dates, so we can plan the scope and schedule.

Do BSCs use the same testing process?

No. Biological safety cabinets use different airflow and filtration arrangements and require different procedures. View our laboratory certification services for related equipment testing.
